John Samuel on CBS Mornings: Port Strike is About the Future of Work

John Samuel, a Partner & Managing Director with AlixPartners, talks about why automation is overshadowing union demands for wage increases as the central issue of the dockworkers strike. Can robots and humans co-exist? Yes, but the relationship still has plenty of kinks to work out. “This is the future of work,” Samuel said. “You’re seeing workers on the East Coast saying ‘we need airtight language for anything automation or semi-automation (related) because we can negotiate wages but if we’re getting 10-20% fewer hours of work, then the (benefits) are offsetting and there is no real increase.’”
